Crunch Time

Well it’s nice to be out of London again for a bit and back in Cardiff . To be fair the weather here has been uncharacteristically good for April although today has proven to be the exception. Still can’t complain. I’m not enjoying the work so much, what with the fun of revision coursework and everyday course reading eating in to my freetime (which would otherwise be occupied with Mario Kart in all likelihood). Still it’s nice to be out of the suburbs and back in the student community. There are certain features you notice in suburbia, especially in a commuter town, with a lot of schools like mine. The chav population is higher for one thing. Well I say Chav, but I really mean small kids who dress in tracksuits and hold on to this hopeless belief that they live in a ghetto and subsequently form ‘crews’ and have fights to prove their worth. It’s all quite deluded and Neanderthal really. The other day proved this point when I encountered some Chavs on my way home from West Wi...

Vantage Point Review

Image
To give a brief summary of the plot: The president is due to give a speech at an important peace summit. That is until his is shot and shortly after the event he was speaking at was bombed. What follows is basically the explanation of what really happened from the Vantage Point of various people caught up in the terrori st attack. Now I don’t know how to approach a film like this as I could see that it carries quite an overt political warning that basically legitimates the war on terror. The whole thing screams out to the American public that the terrorists are one step ahead of the US intelligence and also possess quite ridiculous levels of mobile technology. Now let’s remember one glaring flaw with this fact portrayed, and that is that terrorist’s budgets and technological know-how couldn’t possibly create a mobile phone (as there was in the film) that can blow up bombs remotely or control a remote gun. Then again it did to that end also come across a lit tle like a Sony hand...

It sucks to be a child these days.

I have now reached the age where childhood becomes something of a memory. However, it hasn’t failed to reach my attention that the childhood of my yesteryear is significantly different to the childhood of 2008. When I was growing up you could sense that we were riding on the last hurrah of a fairly carefree childhood. Both in school and in life generally, as it was an easier time and a little less pressurised. Things have changed massively since then, mainly through the amount of exams that kids are forced to do since then. I mean for heavens sake, children are now given homework from the age of 5. Homework didn’t become a thing for my age-group until at least when I was 10 and even then it wasn’t that much. Nowadays kids get somewhere between 1 hour to two hours of homework each night, and this is partially to do with the way that school has been bastardised and turned into key modules which no one gives a damn about. Things like the literacy hour and the numeracy hour immed...

Lacking Inspiration

What Can I say except it is hard to focus on things when you have spent the whole day stuffing envelopes. Envelopes that are being sent to big names such as Ross Kemp or Sir Bob Geldof and will probably never be looked at twice before they end up in the bin. Still that's the price I pay for fairly flexible work whilst temping. It's just money at the end of the day. As a quick moan. Don't you find it annoying when parents of murdered problem children claim their children wouldn't have hurt a fly. How the bloody hell do they normally find themselves in that kind of situation in the first place do you think? I mean there are notable exceptions to the rule like for instance the Rhys Thomas case last year. Now don't get me wrong the death of a child is a horrible horrible thing, especially if they are killed as an innocent bystander. But in the many cases the child was a little hellion and then for the parents to try and paint a tawdry picture portraying their child as a...

Thought for the time being - Why is Heather Mills still here?

Good Afternoon, Just as a little pre-amble, I have decided to revive my blog. Why? Well because, you know it’s something to do and it helps with my writing. It’s going to be more of the same really a few details about my life, with a little bit of social commentary on current affairs. Some of consequence and others of none, but not everything in life needs to be of consequence after all. Just to fill in what’s been happening with me (if anyone reads this to find out how I’m doing then thank you, we should go out for a pint sometime), I’m still at Uni and living with 4 out of the 8 people I lived with last year. My course has been good if a little bit difficult in certain moments. Although I get the impression some lecturers mark harshly on purpose in the second year to scare us, as everyone seems to be getting lower marks. Nothing much else has happened really, although I am becoming slightly spiritual in a Buddhist sense and I also am now a radio producer for a nice little show w...

An update? No way!

Hello For all those people who still read this (haha I joke of course), I know a few people happen on this relic every now and again. Please have a look at my new venture with one of my friends at Uni. To sum the site up its really just me and my friend Tom poking fun at music lyrics (which to be fair most of the time talk a load of shite and we capitalise on this fact) and now as a new edition music videos. You'll laugh, You'll cry, You'll sue us for libel. Enjoy and who knows one day I might blog properly again one magical day, but then what with the advent of Facebook I don't really need webspace to post fun picures etc, maybe I'll find a use for this site yet who knows but please have a look at: http://videokilledtheradiostar.org/ Have Fun all Dave Away!

No smoke without fire

Image
Sup Well I've decided to drop my semi-retirement from the blogging scene to talk about an event which has happened recently. Many of you will remember this which befell a couple of our previous schoolmates not long ago. For those of you who don't basically these two guys who went to our school decieded to set some paper on fire whilst travelling on a local train. Not the most clever idea considering the fire got out of hand and caused substantial damage. Especially not so clever considering the train had cctv too. Basically they went down for three years each. Now anyway this now contextualised this brings me on to my main point. I was surfing across Facebook (as I do) when I noticed a group was discussing this. I joined in as I found the fact that these two could be so stupid was amusing and discussion worthy. This being done I later recieved this message from a friend of the pair. "I noticed you were one of the people to comment on the discussion regarding Gence Emek ...

Hoy I have opted to give you a look into life in wales. It takes a while to get you used to, but once your here then its easy enough. To begin Cardiff Central ( Caerdydd Canolog) , the gateway into the city. Ah lovely (spoken like a true welshman). We can see here the Millenium stadium which is one of the first things you see coming into Cardiff. Erm try to ignore this when you get here. This is where the magic happens. I.E it is the Uni main campus where we have lectures and such. Now to where I live in Talybont South. This is the sort of middle class area of the Talybont complex. To describe it, it's kind of like a housing estate but with no chavs or graffiti. When I say middle class though it's only because our houses arn't as nice as the new ones in Talybont Court which cost a bit more or the outdated old houses in Talybont North (or the Talybronx as we here call it). I would post a picture of my house. House 26, but I haven't yet taken a picture of it but I will p...

News from the Valleys

Yo I could begin this post with Welsh like saying Creso (welcome) but to be honest I'd rather distance myself from that language as much as possible for obvious reasons. I just wanted to keep this blog going and keep everyone updated on the goings on here in Cardiff as quite a few things have happened. As you may expect lectures have started but its's all been very interesting so far. Its been quite quirky too, for instance in my first lecture we ended up viewing a clip of the Simpsons and an American Football game, albeit only so the lecturer could demonstrate his point. Things got weirder by the end of the week when in Cultural Critism I was asked to culturally consider a giant box of cornflakes. Yes indeed, lectures have been anything but dull. Other happenings; I've been out a few times this week, One notable occasion was where I went to see a stage hypnotist. Now I have never before in my life seen a live hypnotism and have regarded it with a mixture of sceptism and c...

Wow I'm In Wales

Thats right readers I'm now at University. The University I've ended up with is the good old Cardiff University, Which I've got to after a fair deal of Wrangling. Long story short I got 2 UMS below the needed grade of ABB and then got a remark which boosted me to that level. Anyway I'm here now and I'm settling into my new student digs. So far I've met 7 of my 8 flatmates. Sadly all are men although we have a fair few girls across the hall and upstairs but its not the same really. Having lived in a house of all males for the past 4 years I hoped for a bit of a change but to no avail sadly. However complaints aside my new flatmates seem nice. They are Will, Matt, Simon, Rich, Lee, Vince and Mysterious Asian Guy (Naturally None of us have met him yet but hope to soon and learn his true name). It proved an interesting first day. After feeling very distressed at leaving my home for nearly 19 years me and my Dad took the long journey up the M4 to Wales. When I arrive...

Do Childrens TV presenters make sexual innuendo on purpose or am I just sick minded?

Image
Well exams are now finished thankfully so I now have a rediculous amount of freetime. Although yesterday involved going to Thorpe Park, I'm going to follow a different theme. As you can see from the title I'm going to explore the age old question of do childrens presenters/programmes include sexual innuendo on purpose. From a young age we were all exposed to childrens shows like Postman Pat and such. We also had to deal with the tiresome antics of the presenters between programmes. Anyway this is what brought me to this question. The other day when I had woken up early for an exam I happened across Cbeebies (a programme for very young children for those of you who don't know) These are the kind of fools we can find on this show. Anyways while watching this the presenters were pretending to be a train. The woman preceeded the man in an up the arse kind of way and held two heldlamps in an unsubltle way over her chest. This got me thinking. Did they just do this fomation out o...

The end of an era

Image
So ladies and gentlemen I'd like to thank you for coming here in the first place considering I haven't posted for many moons. But yes folks your high frilled host is making a comeback of sorts. A lot has gone on recently and its going to take me some time to fill in all the gaps. But I'll list a couple of key events: -I went out to vote for the first time which proved interesting -I bought a car Its pretty awesome and has remote central locking. (HAH IN YOUR FACE JON) I'll start by rounding up the most obvious of happenings, naturally things have been winding down (or up depending on your personal perception) at school as the dreaded exams draw closer. As a matter of fact I had one the other day which was went ok I feel. Still though thats one down four to go. The first event in this spiral of denoument was the sixth form prom or ball or whatever you want to call it as long as it isn't Homecoming. WE DON'T HAVE THAT HERE AND WE DON'T WANT TO EITHER! The nigh...

ARRRRRGHHH!!!!!!

Greed: Medium Gluttony: Medium Wrath: Very High Sloth: Medium Envy: Medium Lust: High Pride: High Take the Seven Deadly Sins Quiz This doesnt look too good does it. Also I should hasten to mention that I am writing this post on the eve of a very annoying week in which I have two quite tough exams on the same day and furthermore a driving test. To put simply my anxiety levels have hit a critical mass. Still some good has happened recently: I now have five out of six Uni confirmations from: Staffordshire, Cardiff, Lincoln, Winchester and Kingston. To be honest though non of them will prove difficult to get into except maybe Cardiff who actually are asking for decent grades (in this case ABB). Then again I wont really be able to assess how tough this will be until I get the January results but if all goes well I might have an easy may exam period Hopefully. Anyway boring school stuff aside the last few weeks have consisted of a mixture of school, parties and christmas so a lot has ...

Times high on the Bah-O-meter

Hello Readers Once again I return to that, that is the blogosphere. I've been gone for some time, but hey I've been busy with Psychology Coursework ( I GOT A FECKING E FOR THE DRAFT!!!! I have since improved it though) English Coursework Revision for all my subjects plus one retake in Psychology Some work on the film coursework Driving and that stuff Uni applications I have actually now applied to Uni to do Journalism. I have applied to Cardiff Staffordshire Sheffield Kingston Lincoln Winchester I hope to get into Cardiff as it has the best reputation for the course I want. Things seem to be in my favour as they require ABB and I'm predicted AAB on my Application, so im moderately confident. I have though recieved word from Staffordshire and Lincoln. Lincoln want 260 points which I think equates to quite a lowly amount in grades of about a C. Then again if I go there I get a placement at "Go Girl" magazine. Tommorow though I have an interview with Staffordshire wh...

Driving ambition

Hey I'm Back Well school is well and truly underway at the moment and I've found I've actually had to do WORK AT HOME! What a disasterous thought! quite a lot too what with annoying coursework and that. That aside other things have been going on too. Last week I went to teh Steve Fishers house for some drinks. That was quite fun. For a while we played Texas hold-em WITH ARMY MEN!! (currency that is) I started out with a small but effective force but through some luck and skill I had an army which would have put the chinese to shame. The proudest part was when I won Matts beloved Minesweeper dude. After that I saved the day when we made a much needed trip to the offlicence and I produced my fake ID . The day after that I with Chris and Nick met up with the random girls that Chris had left his number with. This required a long and slow journey to Lewisham. The whole thing can be summed up in one word as awkward. Not much was said between both parties so we decieded that this ...

Summer Summary

Wow I forgot about this. Never Mind I shall make amends as best as I can with the use of my memory. A lot has taken place since I last posted. The first Real event of the summer Was france of course, as Has been well documented by others. I shall sum up in a few random words. Croque Monsuire SILENCE! SORTIE! SORTIE! Beer Chris in a chefs hat Aquariums French People!!!! EVERYWHERE!!! It was good fun all in all. The next major event was that I bought a bass guitar. Practice with that continued over the summer. I can play a few things now though not spectacualy My dad went to have an operation on his nose which saw him out the way for a few days which was fun. I chilled at some friends houses during this kinda interim period, went to a few parties. Then Came results day which was quite a nervous time but it was all good I got A's in English Language and Film And C's in Psychology and History (which I was giving up anyways) Then came the event summer had been building up for REA...

Catching Up

Well a lot has happened recently. Ill keep it brief and stick to the important stuff. I've finally taken up driving lessons over six months after getting my provisional license. I've only had four lessons as yet but I seem to be doing ok. If I was bad to start with I'm certainly improving now. Now to buy a car! Being honest its not gonna be a Ferrari and its gonna be slow but as the insurance premiums insist on being so high for learner drivers my age I have no where else to turn. Not to mention a lack of a large budget. I have a new Job which pays a lot more than my lame shelf stacking job at Waitrose. Its not very taxing as it just involves inputting stuff into a huge computer data base but its very relaxed and easy so I'm sitting on quite a cushy deal. Its now the summer Holidays which is always a good thing. I fortunately gave the last day of school a miss owing to the fact that I had no lessons and that it was going to suck ass anyway. By all accounts it did so I d...

Hollywood Nonsense

This is gonna be a film review post today. Yesterday I went to see war of the worlds and well in some ways I wasn't too surprised. I mean its a Spielberg Film with Tom Cruise as the lead. Its strayed from the original plot set in Victorian England like in the HG Wells novel. It has a huge special effects budget. Put the pieces together and you can see why I found it a tad annoying at times. Having said this though the film does have some very good points as well as bad which I will now summerise. The Good: The alien tripods are very cool looking and sounding The acting altogether actually isn't half bad apart from a lot of screaming and hysteria which should be expected from a disaster movie such as this. The special effects do their job and they do it well The story has a beginning middle and an end Not too much emphasis is put on the human race as a whole. It follows the Ferrier family and the Ferrier family only with a few others becoming involved along the way. At times the...
